Hey, thanks Lauren! Bizarrely, I'm on the editorial committee for Participations (though not a very active one). I'll follow that up.

Just catching up on my reading. You might be interested in this article that explores the notion of "kinaesthetic empathy" in relation to audiences of Strictly Come Dancing. The article comes from a special issue of Participations focusing on 'Screen Dance Audiences', so there might be other pieces there that tickle your fancy too.

Oh please, do find time! :-)
Because it is more than good, even healthy, if someone puts question marks on stuff we take for granted.

I'd love to read about styles & ways that have more flava than the one served by the lindycookiecutterfactory somewhere that poops out this perfect product. Where did all the the Big Bs & Shorty Gs go? Even if it that's nonsense, nice to have thought about it first.

At a lindyweekend I attended few weeks ago, I really enjoyed some taster classes. Those were level free and that was pretty good after being tagged with coloured wrist bands for levels. Ofcourse that won't do always. But this pecking order vibe that comes with these wrist bands is just weird. Or maybe just like normal society?

Here's an interesting blogpost about branding in the arts: http://www.artsjournal.com/sandow/2012/05/branding-my-students.html

I agree with all those thoughts, Rebecca. I find it so much more satisfying as a teacher and as a student to be in that sort of class....

...but at the same time there's also room for classes with 'masters' like Dawn Hampton, etc, where you really do go as a student to listen and learn.

Diversity in learning experiences. That's the key.

Yes to both!! Especially the part about the stupidity of 'levels.' Everyone has such unique strengths and weaknesses, even newbies. And of course we stand a lot to learn from our fellow classmates, if we are open to it. When you insist on categorizing based on level, students tend to compare themselves to each other. We rank our classmates instead of viewing them as individuals. "This guy isn't leading this move correctly; he shouldn't be in this level!" (Ask me who's had that thought before, heh heh.)

If you understand that every class is a mixed-levels class, students can be oriented towards working together, contributing to the learning environment rather than being passive consumers of it.

I love you and all your thinking.

It's only reading something like this that shakes me out of my funk and gets me thinking more deeply about dance and everything else.

By the way, the mirroring thing is totally *it*. I don't think you're extrapolating too wildly (though I hardly have hard science to back it up). I've seen it used, and used it myself, as an explanation for why people who don't dance are not nearly as engaged as dancers are when I try to show them a lindy hop video.

I haven't even watched the videos you've linked. Looking forward to it.

May like your mix, but some songs don't play on my comp. Is it my snow leopard or are those tracks in lossless format? I ran into that when uploading, had to convert tracks to mp3.
